Inclusion in Health
There have been many numerous studies that show that the LGBTQ community is at a higher risk for committing suicide, being depressed, and abusing drugs. In addition, gay and bisexual men are also at a higher risk for contracting AIDS than any other group (heterosexual men and women, and lesbians). Some studies that I have read show a correlation between an inclusive school environment and a decrease in risks.
Although inclusion in general is important, it is crucial in the health curriculum. Howard County's 9th grade health curriculum includes a Social & Emotional unit, a Tobacco, Alcohol & other Drugs unit, a Disease Prevention unit, and a Human sexuality unit. These four topics outline dangers that the LGBTQ community is at high risks for. Currently, thirteen states require health teachers to educate their students on the LGBTQ community; however, four of those must teach the subject negatively, such as saying that homosexuality is wrong/a sin. If there was more inclusion of LGBTQ materials in these units, LGBTQ risks could be lowered.
